David was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, and moved to Iowa with his family at an early age.  He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1956.  He then attended Cornell of Iowa in Mt. Vernon, Iowa and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.  From 1958-1964 David served in the Arkansas National Guard and was activated for the Berlin Crisis.  While in dental school he was commissioned as a First Lt. in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army.  Upon graduation from University of Tennessee’s College of Dentistry in Memphis, Tennessee in 1965 he was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.  He has been in private practice of family dentistry since 1967, first in El Dorado, Arkansas and since 1982 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

 

After joining the Rotary Club of South Shreveport in May, 1998 David served on the Board of Directors, as Vice-President and then President of the Club in 2003-2004.  He and Judy have been active as hosts for several GSE teams and Open World delegates from Russia.  They traveled to Turkey in 2006 as members of a Rotary Friendship Exchange.  He served as chairman and co-chairman of the South Shreveport’s Open World Program through the Library of Congress.  He has served on the Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee, Youth Exchange Committee, District Governor Nominating Committee and GSE Selection Committee.  David is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Paul Harris Society.  He serves on the Executive Boards of the Bay St. Louis Community Hall Long Term Hurricane Relief Project and the Shreveport based Right to Play, Inc.

 

David is married to Judy Bellew who is also a member of the Rotary Club of South Shreveport and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.  She has served as Treasurer and Secretary of her Club and is District 6190 Secretary for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.  Judy is a long term employee for Querbes & Nelson Insurance Agency, serving the firm as Claims Manager.

 

David has 5 children and 2 step-children.  Between the two of them, David and Judy have 10 grandchildren.  In their spare time, they enjoy Rotary activities in addition to dancing, gardening/landscaping and computer gaming.
