John was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Telecommunications he moved south in 1981 to work at KNOE-TV in Monroe, Louisiana as a general assignment reporter. Over the years he worked as an anchor, assignment editor and assistant news director.
In 1997, John went to law school at Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi. During law school he served on the Law Review and was Editor-in-Chief of Law Review during his third year. He graduated summa cum laude in May 2000. John then returned to Monroe where he joined the law firm of Hayes, Harkey, Smith & Cascio, LLP in Monroe, Louisiana in August 2000 and was admitted to the Louisiana State Bar Association in October 2000. He was named a partner in the firm in January 2007.
His law practice consists primarily of general insurance defense, professional liability defense, medical malpractice defense and corporate law.
John is married to wife Deborah, an analyst at Centurytel, Inc. in Monroe, Louisiana. They have two daughters, Brianna who is age 13 and Danielle, age 8. He presently serves on the Grace Episcopal School Board of Trustees, serves as the President of the Fourth Judicial District Bar Association in Louisiana from January 2009-January 2010 and coaches two softball teams. John has served the Rotary Club of Monroe as the President in 2007-2008 and is PR Chair for Rotary District 6190. He is also a member of the HOC for the 2011 Rotary International Convention in New Orleans
